Charles D. Brown, Principal and Co-Founder
Charles D. Brown brings over 30 years of executive search, resource planning, institutional advancement, foundation management and organizational development experience to Brown Schroeder & Associates, Inc. He has worked with several successful and widely known educational and non-profit institutions.
As director of medical development at Stanford University, Charlie worked with university faculty and the dean of the school of medicine to identify and recruit volunteer leadership. He oversaw the front-line development staff and was a key fundraising strategist for programs that generated over $100 million annually in philanthropic support, working closely with colleagues in principal gifts, major gifts communications and stewardship programs. Charlie was also the university representative to Stanford Medical Center’s Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Task Force, and served as a member of the medical center’s committee on patient privacy.
Prior to Stanford, Charlie was executive director of development at Johns Hopkins University, where he was responsible for human resources, international development, major gifts programs, foundation relations, communications and research. He also served as the central fundraising strategist for nine university divisions and directed planning and budgeting for campaigns that raised $1.4 billion in contributions.
At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Charlie was director of external affairs. He managed an extensive range of development programs for the world renowned art museum, recruited trustees for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and created a capital campaign plan to raise $250 million. Charlie also planned and executed fundraising activities for Guggenheim museums in Bilbao, Spain and Venice.
Earlier in his career, as vice president of the non-profit practice at A.T. Kearney Executive Search in New York, Charlie spearheaded senior-level executive searches for a variety of clients, including New Jersey Network, the New Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Maryland Center for the Performing Arts and Polytechnic University in New York.
Charlie was also development director for the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, the Pennington School in New Jersey and was associate director for the annual giving program at Princeton University. He is a former member of the board of directors for the Trust for Hidden Villa and the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Foundation, and currently serves on the board of the Doctors Outreach Clinics and the development committee at Castilleja School.
Charlie holds an A.B. degree in politics from Princeton University.
