James S. Armstrong

Jim Armstrong brings nearly 40 years of non-profit management and institutional advancement experience to the clients of Brown Schroeder & Associates, Inc. In addition to staff positions, heprovided advancement and campaign services for many others organizations as a consultant. Jim’s career has been hallmarked by success in all elements of development and advancement.

As the founding vice president and board member of Children’s Hospital & Research Institute Foundation, Jim created innovative development programs and strategically recruited, managed and mentored a staff that grew to 26 members with $24 million in annual revenue within six years. He also identified, enlisted and effectively utilized board members, advancement volunteers, administrators, and medical staff members.

At San Francisco State University as development director, Jim recruited, trained, mentored and managed 11 professional-level direct reports; created strategies and lead initiatives to develop major gift and planned gift portfolios; and successfully solicited six- and seven-figure gifts.

While at the University of San Francisco, Jim directed annual giving and grant center programs, played pivotal roles in the $20 million capital campaign and created innovative donor recognition and stewardship programs.

As director of development and stewardship at the Archdiocese of San Francisco he was responsible for a $3 million annual appeal program, provided guidance and counsel to parishes, elementary and preparatory schools and missions. He also conceived of and directed the first successful fundraising campaign in support of a visit of a pope in the United States – John Paul II.

Most recently, while Director of Development at Fort Mason Center, Jim successfully guided the early phases including the board and nucleus fund solicitations of the cultural organization’s first capital campaign in 20 years.

Jim has a bachelors of arts in politics and a certificate in non-profit organizational management from the University of San Francisco. He also has maintained status as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) since 1982.
